AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A man from Waynesboro is facing multiple charges after leading law enforcement officers on a chase through several jurisdictions.

According to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy tried to pull over a speeding Ford Explorer on East Side Highway around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Ford refused to stop and the deputy pursued it onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, crossing into Nelson and Rockbridge counties.

That pursuit ended after the deputy entered Rockbridge County.

Then around 1:25 a.m. Thursday, a different Augusta County deputy spotted a single-vehicle crash near mile marker 216 on southbound Interstate 81.

It was the same Ford Explorer from the earlier chase, though it was unoccupied.

Deputies searched the area but could not find a suspect or anyone who was hurt from the crash, but they were able to determine that the Ford had been stolen out of Chesterfield County.

Around 10 a.m. Thursday, the sheriff’s office was called about a vehicle being stolen from the parking lot of a Circle K gas station in Mint Springs.

After deputies arrived and looked at surveillance video of the scene, they issued a “be on the lookout” for the vehicle.

Around 11:05 a.m., another deputy found the vehicle on Delphine Avenue in Waynesboro and tried to pull it over.

The driver refused to stop and another pursuit began which ran through the city of Waynesboro and into Augusta County.

An off-duty deputy then deployed “stop sticks” near Dooms Crossing Road and East Side Highway, which flattened the tires of the stolen vehicle.

The vehicle finally stopped on the 500 block of East Side Highway and the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Albert Cox, was arrested.

Cox was taken to Augusta Health for medical treatment and then released into police custody.

He is facing charges from the Staunton Police Department and the Chesterfield County Police Department as well as charges of eluding, grand larceny of an automobile, and driving under the influence in Augusta County.

He is being held at the Middle Ridge Regional Jail awaiting a hearing.
