ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Three people were hurt in a shooting in Albemarle County on Thursday night and so far, no one is in custody.

Around 7 p.m., officers with the Albemarle County Police Department responded to a shooting at the Mallside Forest Apartment Complex.

Three people were taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Investigators say two victims are in surgery and one is waiting to be treated in the emergency room. A witness at the scene describes what she heard and saw.

"We heard two different gunshots. One sounded like a regular one and the other one sound like a little bit of like a machine gun. And we were really scared and when we were over there, we were close by through the streets here and we saw, uh, like, uh a car ran off like really fast. We just found out that, probably, like kids got shot or something like that and then we ran up here and got worried because that is the first time this has ever happened mostly some kids here for the residents and it was just really shocking," said Claoric Claudio, a resident of the complex.

Police are not confirming the age or gender of the victims. They say at this time it’s hard to tell the condition of the three who were shot.

"With any shots fired or any bullet wounds, we can say what we see from the outside. If they get to the hospital and it's done more damage on the inside then we are looking at additional damage," said Bridgette Butynski, ACPD spokesperson.

Officials say they don't believe there is an immediate threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing.
