CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A former University of Virginia Health doctor was sentenced to prison and probation for distributing child pornography.

Thirty-eight-year-old David Lapides pleaded guilty to two counts of receiving or transmitting child pornography in January.

He was being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he had been incarcerated since July 22, 2021.

According to the Daily Progress, Lapides was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years of probation.

Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania says the sentence is “serious and significant.”

“It’s more than double the high end of the guidelines,” he said. “[Lapides] lost his career, his wife and his children, and he’ll have to register as a sex offender.”
