CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Charlottesville City Council has voted to lower the speed limit on Cherry Avenue.

It’s a heavily-trafficked road that runs through a residential neighborhood and by several schools.

The recommendation was to lower the speed limit to 25 miles per hour between Cleveland Avenue and Roosevelt Brown Boulevard and 30 mph between Roosevelt Brown Boulevard and Ridge Street.

This was an important issue before the council, mainly due to the school bus driver shortage and more children walking to school.

It is hoped the reduced speed limits will make the route safer for children walking to school.

These new speed limits will go into effect next week.
