ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The theme for this year's National Fire Prevention Week is "Fire won’t wait, plan your escape."

Modern homes burn faster than ever before, which is why firefighters are trying to help everyone prepare in case there's a fire in their homes.

Firefighters are partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week.

During this week firefighters, visit schools to educate kids about fire escape plans.

The Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue is also setting up tables around the county to give information and get the word out about its programming.

Assistant Fire Marshall Captain Micaiah Ledford says ACFR has a specific message regarding its goal for the week.

"We want to make sure that you have a working smoke alarm in your home, and we want to make sure you practice egress planning in the case of a fire in your house. Know two ways out of every room, and make sure that when you get out, you stay out," Ledford said.

You can visit the ACFR website to learn how to get the fire department to install free smoke alarms in your house.

ACFR will be at Target on Wednesday and at the Crossroads Store in North Garden on Friday, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.
