CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Two area nonprofits have received grants from Women United in Philanthropy.

On Tuesday, WUP presented grants of $20,000 each to City of Promise and the Shelter for Help in Emergency.

"Collective giving is such a powerful tool!  Women United is proud to award two $20,000 grants this year.  Nineteen non-profit organizations that support women and children in the Charlottesville area submitted applications this year.  All these organizations perform quality work and make a huge positive impact to our community. The Grants Committee had the difficult task of choosing five finalists and Women United members had the challenge of voting on two winners.  A big thank you to the organizations who submitted a proposal and to the 2021-2022 Grants Committee for their diligent work," said Karen Poos, Grants Chair for Women United 2021-2022.

The two winners were selected from among five finalists picked from 19 applicants. The other finalists were Giving Words, HER Sports and Reclaimed Hope Initiative.

These grants are funded by WUP members. Since 2005, WUP has awarded more than $740,000 to local nonprofits that focus on improving the lives of women and children in the area.
