CARLISLE, Pa. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is one of six regional food banks that will benefit from a record number of turkey and chicken donations from a grocery store chain.

The GIANT Company plans to donate more than 13,000 turkeys and chickens to community partners and food banks ahead of Thanksgiving.

According to a release, this is a record number of donations, delivering more than 110,000 servings of protein to families in need.

This is part of the company’s work to address hunger in the communities it serves, which include Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.

“The GIANT Company believes that all families, particularly those facing food insecurity, should enjoy a holiday meal and celebrate together with full plates and full hearts this year,” said April Mock, director of communications and CSR, The GIANT Company. “We’re grateful to our local food bank and food pantry partners, and our team member volunteers, for their support in our annual Thanksgiving tradition to help eliminate hunger and connect families for a better future.”

The company says team members will also be volunteering at food banks again this year, packing hunger relief boxes and helping to organize and restock shelves.

One thing new this year is GIANT inviting customers to help by donating $3, $5 or $10 at the register between Nov. 1 and 13.

These financial donations will benefit BRAFB as we all the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank, the Maryland Food Bank, Philabundance, and the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Then between Nov. 11 and 24, people can donate free turkey certificates in-store or give 400 CHOICE points online.

For each of these donations, GIANT will give $10 to the local food bank.

BRAFB serves 25 counties across Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley.
