ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital offers special resources to help caregivers.

For National Family Caregivers Month, the hospital is offering caregivers a space to breathe, relax and take time for themselves in the Caregiver Center.

"The whole idea is to create an oasis for our caregivers to come where they can recharge, they can focus on themselves for a little while and really be prepared for the role that they have now as a caregiver supporting their loved one," said Katy Kreinbaum, the coordinator for the Caregiver Center.

The Caregiver Program started in 2019, with the Caregiver Center opening in June 2020.

It was modeled after a program in New York and is a free resource funded by the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation.

"We have a beautiful area with a fireplace, a private room for family meetings, we have a room with a massage chair, we have a little business hub where a caregiver can come and take advantage of the computer and print out materials if they need to and really just a lot of resource material but most importantly a place where they can come and talk to a trained volunteer or myself and really just focus on themselves," said Kreinbaum.

The center is designed as a place where caregivers can step away when they can, for example, while their loved one is resting or getting a test done.

It is open to everyone in the community, even if they do not have a loved one staying in the hospital.

"Our caregivers do deserve the attention and the support and that's why this is a pretty remarkable program and to have the actual space where they can come to feel the support is what makes it so much more special," Kreinbaum said.

This center is a first-of-its-kind program in the Sentara Health system, and Kreinbaum says it ties into the caring tradition at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.

"At the caregiver center, the goal is to help the caregiver, which ultimately helps the patient in their recovery," she said. “By focusing on that, we are ultimately helping the caregiver be a better caregiver for their patient, and therefore their outcome."

The Caregiver Center is located between the Cancer Center and the Sentara Martha Jefferson gift shop on the main floor.
