ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Eastwood Winery made "Start a Spark" its fourth-quarter community partner this year.

Start a Spark was started by a family in Central Virginia. It donates firewood to families in need in six Central Virginia counties to help heat their homes during the cold winters.

As soon as the rain let up for a little, attendees were able to participate in a cornhole tournament as a part of the fundraiser.

“Many, many families, a lot of more rural families than city but a lot of people depend on wood for heat,” said Kelly Matcalf, the founder of Start a Spark.

There was a silent auction at this event with baskets donated from businesses in the communities. There was also wood on display, to show just how much wood it takes to heat a family's home.

The money from the auction will fund the processing of wood, so Start a Spark can provide it at a low cost.

Someone who helped this organization with its mission was able to put it all in perspective.

“I’ve cried a couple of times. There was one family that we pulled up to the house and it just absolutely broke my heart because I could see from just looking at the house the insulation wasn’t there and the windows were not good,”  said Johanna Kessler-Sandridge, a board member for Start a Spark.

The organization is always looking for more volunteers to help deliver and cut wood, so if you’re interested, click here.
