ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- This holiday season, more people are expected to be traveling, creating more dangers on the roads.

Officials say it's important to be mindful, alert, and safe while driving, especially with all the recent fatal accidents in Albemarle County.

This year, the Albemarle County Police Department has investigated more than a dozen fatal crashes. And officers say quite a few of these deaths could have been prevented.

"My unit in 2022 has investigated 14 fatal crashes. At least 15 fatalities, we had one crash where two people lost their lives. Seven of the persons involved in the crashes that we've investigated this year were not wearing their seat belts, and might have survived had they been wearing a seat belt,” said ACPD Master Patrol Officer Kate Kaine.

She says that seat belts can prevent death if accidents happen. She also mentions that as the holiday approaches, make sure to put the distractions away, buckle up, follow the speed limits and watch out for not only how you're driving, but how others around you are driving as well.
