ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- James Monroe's Highland has announced the return of its immersive experience After Hours at Highland.

It takes you through a guided tour of the 1818 Guesthouse in a more intimate and exciting way.

“One of the biggest things we’ve done very recently is that we’ve actually reinterpreted and recreated a significant portion of our exhibit spaces and made them a lot more inclusive for all who lived here at Highland,” said Jason Woodle, head of Marketing.

With a focus on Monroe’s presidential years, the exhibits show how Highland is a lens for understanding early American history and its present-day legacies.

“For one thing, it’s the holidays, and you’re getting it after hours when it’s a little bit darker outside, so it brings a little bit more of a sneak to the property,” said Woodle.

What makes this experience extra special is that "President James Monroe" will greet visitors and a Highland guide will be present for questions and discussion.

Woodle says that this adds to the already unique experience.

“I think people really like to interact with the Monroe actor, as well as our guide staff, they’re really phenomenal and they can answer any question you throw at them about the history of the property and all the inhabitants that were here,” he added.

With a modern touch on the exhibits, Highland is working to make sure everyone’s story is told and respected.

“It’s really fantastic to go through our exhibits and see how we’ve woven the stories of Monroe, his family, the enslaved community, all into one fantastic narrative for guests to absorb," said Woodle.

After Hours at Highland will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 17, 27, and 28.

Tickets cost $25 and are by reservation only.
