Depth is key in UVA's 11-0 start
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (CBS19 SPORTS)-- Lucky number 11; it's the number of wins the uva women's basketball team has on the season now and also is the number of players on the team that has already hit double digits this season, meaning everyone on the roster has hit double figures. It's not just a sign of the 'Hoos talent but also their depth.
"I like that we're deep," says head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, "You know when people can come in and you don't really miss a beat that's great that's how I want to be. the deeper your team is better you're going to be, especially when it comes to preseason. so I don't know exactly if we'll be in an 11-woman rotation throughout the course of the season but I know we have 11 players that can play at any time and go off at any time."
After playing 11 games all within a month UVA is getting their first real break of the season now that finals week is here. It's a break they weren't dying for, thanks to the depth on the roster the women have been able to rest and have fresh legs on the court all season long.
With the addition of grad transfer Sam Brunelle, transfer Alexia Smith as well as two freshmen Cady Pauly and Yonta Vaughn UVA has had a wide range of options from the bench. Coach Mox says they have enough talent to rotate their starting lineup all season long, however one of the challenges of having an excess of talent is learning to juggle it all.
"I feel like we're very competitive as a team," says Mir Mclean, "The depth helps that a lot. you know you have to put everybody on a scout and there's a game where somebody could get hot or the next game another people like Coach Mox said different games call for different things so I think that just puts the competition at a different level."
