STAUNTON, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A town that prides itself on being very festive during the holiday season says it has welcomed more people than usual.

Staunton is currently in the opening season of the Santa Express.

The city typically sees visitors in the warmer seasons, but this winter, there have been more out-of-town faces than usual. Numbers aren’t back yet but this winter may have brought in more tourism than the usual peak seasons.

The local hotels and restaurants have been doing great business since Staunton announced its new scenic train months ago.

“Tourism has really increased, compared to last year, compared to a lot of years and that’s primarily because we of course have the new Santa train, the Santa Express,” said Sheryl Wagner, Director of Tourism for the city of Staunton.

The Santa Express Train sold out very quickly after releasing tickets. Buckingham Branch Railroad said it might be extending the train next year due to high demand.

If you missed the Santa Express, the Buckingham Branch Railroad will continue to have the scenic train. It does not have Santa but it’s still a great experience.
