ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- One in five girls miss a day of school because they don't have menstrual products, and two Albemarle High School students are working to change that.

AHS senior Weining Ding and sophomore Avery Bruen started empowerHER two weeks ago. They collect menstrual products to distribute in Albemarle County middle and high schools.

So far, they've received 10,000 items and said they already feel the change they're making.

"It deserves the proper products, and especially when it comes to learning it shouldn't be something that takes away from it,” Bruen said.

“We do have products in the bathrooms, but oftentimes they're empty or the machines are broken, so we're finding quality products for everyone," Ding said.

They have a collection scheduled in Forest Lakes North on Friday and are planning another for Dunlora the weekend of Jan. 8.
