Feel Good Friday: Wintergreen prepares for holiday weekend
NELSON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Wintergreen is described by employees as a four seasons paradise. But winter is its busiest season with all the ski slopes families and friends can enjoy.
“So far it’s been a very strong season, skiing has been very good,” said Jay Gamble, the general manager of Wintergreen.
That doesn’t mean the season has been easy though.
With odd winter weather conditions, staff members at Wintergreen have had to work as a team to navigate successful snowmaking.
“We have some of the most sophisticated snow-making equipment worldwide. We have a lot of weather stations and we know exactly what the temperature gradients are at the top of the mountain, mid-mountain, bottom of the mountain, and so we’re constantly adjusting our snow-making outputs based on the temperature gradients,” added Gamble.
Wintergreen is gearing up for a busy holiday weekend and has seen a lot of events sold out.
Gamble says that a reason for this is the tradition families have with skiing.
“Skiing is certainly a family sport, you know three generations oftentimes skiing, with grandparents, parents, grandkids, everybody is participating, there’s no spectators,” he added.
And those generations can look forward to a holiday full of events, including frosty fest kids tennis, a snow castle competition, a boot toss competition, plenty of hikes, and even a glow stick parade.
Despite a hard beginning to the season, Wintergreen has persevered and is prepared to make the most out of its events, while working together as a team.
