CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Work at the Belmont Bridge is continuing, with street closures and utility relocation.

Charlottesville says Old Avon Street is currently closed between Garrett Street and East South Street.

That is where crews are doing grading and stormwater work for the pedestrian plaza.

Drivers are being directed by flaggers on Monticello Road between Graves Street and Old Avon while work is getting underway on two retaining walls.

And flaggers are on another part of Old Avon to help drivers get around utility relocation work.

A new sidewalk is going in on Graves Street between Ninth/Avon Street and Monticello Road, so drivers are again being directed by flaggers through the area.

And pedestrian and vehicular traffic will see intermittent stoppages on Water Street where bridge demolition work is taking place.

This is all part of the ongoing work to replace the Belmont Bridge in downtown Charlottesville, which has been taking place since June 2021.

The second phase of the major project started in December.
