Local theater group wins national award
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Junior Theater Festival (JTF) is the world's biggest and is widely regarded as the best celebration of young people coming together to perform musical theater.
Each troupe performs 15 minutes from a Broadway Junior® show for adjudication by a panel of musical theater experts.
One of those groups performing was DMR Adventures from Charlottesville.
“We think that JTF, the junior theater materials, provide a great way for students to experience musical theater at a more approachable level,” said Xavier Taylor, the music director at DMR Adventures.
DMR performed a snippet from James and the Giant Peach Jr. and was awarded a Freddie G. Excellence in Acting award. This is the sixth award the organization has won in the past eight years.
Music director Xavier Taylor says that a lot went into making a successful performance like this happen, without the use of any costumes or props.
“So we did a lot of formations and working very tightly and closely together to create stage pictures without some of those things, which sometimes can be a little difficult, but also fun and imaginative,” said Taylor.
Since DMR is mainly filled with young kids, an award like this encourages the younger generation to continue theater.
“What we're doing here, what we're training them to do is something that is noticed. and, they're getting better and other people see it, and to be recognized for that is something that can inspire you to keep going,” added Taylor.
In the future, DMR hopes to continue spreading that theater magic to younger generations with productions like Newsies Jr., The Addams Family Jr., Spongebob the Musical Jr., and more this summer.
