ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- This weekend, local schools will host the annual WinterSongs event, which aims to help teach kids about domestic violence and raise money for the Shelter for Help in Emergency.

It's an event that began after the 2014 disappearance and murder of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.

The ninth annual concert is set for Saturday at Monticello High School.

Not only will female choirs from Albemarle and Louis counties as well as Charlottesville schools perform, they'll also spend the day in workshops on building healthy self-esteem, creating awareness about messages that hurt self-esteem and developing strategies to counter those messages.

Burley Middle School eighth graders Sylvia Moses and Ruby Davis will participate in their third WinterSongs.

"It's so important to help people who need it because if you were in their shoes, which you might be when you’re older, you'd want help," Davis said.

"We're probably going to be in relationships, so it's great to have that information to know where to get help if we're ever in a situation like that," Moses said.
