CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A current member of the Charlottesville City Council says he will be seeking re-election.

Councilor Michael Payne made the announcement Monday, saying he will be running in the Democratic primary, which will take place June 20.

“Economic opportunity doesn't exist for too many families in Charlottesville: One in five families still don't earn enough to afford basic necessities in Charlottesville,” he said. “Nearly half of families in our city struggle to afford housing. In just two years, housing costs soared by 25 percent. And in just one year, our homeless population increased by almost 70 percent."

Mayor Lloyd Snook is also expected to announce that he will seek re-election later this week.
