CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- After eight years, the downtown staple The Pie Chest closed its doors on Tuesday, which also happens to be “National Pi Day.”

The shop was packed with patrons getting their last slice.

The Pie Chest owners said they're closing to start other ventures but will still bake for farmers' markets and pop-ups and teach classes.

Long-time customer Lucie Fielding said the closing is bittersweet, because they're happy for the owners' next adventure, but it's a major loss.

"A key part of community for me and for so many, and has been a lending place and just been an important part of their daily lives," Fielding said.

Lone Light Coffee, which shares the Fourth Street storefront with Pie Chest, will take over the entire space.
