NC State rallies to avoid sweep against UVA
RALEIGH, Nc. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- NC State rallied for a 5-4 walk off victory to avoid a series sweep against UVA.
Virginia jumped out early, scoring just three batters into the game. With Ethan O'Donnell in scoring position Jake Gelof knocked his second triple of the season to send O'Donnell in, giving UVA the 1-0 lead. It was the 10th time in 19 games this season UVA has scored in the first inning.
NC State captured its first lead of the weekend with a pair of solo home runs by Eli Serrano III and Chase Nixon in the bottom of the second. UVA starting pitcher Jack O’Connor struck out a season-high eight batters and did not issue a walk in 5.2 innings of work. All three weekend starters for UVA pitched five or more innings.
Later in the bottom of the eighth the Cavaliers escaped a bases loaded, one-out jam. Jake Berry induced an inning-ending ground out in which he beat Serrano to the back on a 3-1 putout.
UVA would lose their 2 run lead in the ninth in dramatic fashion. With 2 outs and bases loaded Cannon Peebles launched a ground ball that went past Griff O'Ferrell for the walk off victory.
The Cavaliers return to Charlottesville for a 6 game homestand starting with Highpoint on Tuesday.
