Sisters in Peru raises money for rural village
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- One University of Virginia student realized they were taking health care for granted during a trip to rural Peru. Now they’re raising money to try to build a medical clinic for the village.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, health care became a main focus in the world. Maya Koehn-Wu says all she could think about were the people she saw struggling on her trip.
A few months later, she and her sister started the Sisters in Peru Project to raise funds to build a medical clinic.
"Haucahuasi is a very rural indigenous community kind of in the middle of the Andes Mountains in Peru. The closest health care clinic is Laudes, which is the nearest city and it's a two-hour walk through the Andes Mountains," said Koehn-Wu.
The Sisters in Peru Project will be hosting a silent auction for art pieces from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Saturday at Visible Records.
