BLACKSBURG Va. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- The Cavalier's 6 runs over the first two innings was too much for the Hokies to overcome as UVA claimed game one of the Commonwealth Clash 9-5.

After a 30 minute rain delay the cavaliers didn't waste any more time as they kick things off with an explosive 6 run 1st inning. Jake Gelof started the scoring spree on a RBI double to send in Griff O'Ferrall. Gelof's 38th run of the season gave the 'Hoos the early lead. Later an RBI single and a sac fly from Kyle Teel made it a 3-0 game. Ethan O'Donnell would double the score and extend the lead with his 7th home run of the season. He went 2-4 from the plate and added an impressive diving catch in the bottom of the second to add to his night.

UVA started to run away with it in the 6th as Kyle Teel hit an RBI single to make it a 9-0 game but a pair of of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning made it a 9-2 game. A three run home blast from Brody Donay brought the Hokies back to life, edging their way back in 9-5.

Brian Edgington impressed on his first Friday night start for the 'Hoos on the mound. Edgington struck out eight batters and threw five scoreless innings. Chase Hungate took over after Edgington while Jay Woolfolk closed the game.

UVA and Virginia Tech face off for game 2 of the three game series Saturday at 7pm.
