UVA bounces back against no. 10 UNC
CHAPEL HILL, Nc. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- The UVA men's lacrosse team stormed past North Carolina 19-12 in wet and rainy conditions. This victory marked their 5th straight win over North Carolina and their 18th straight win following a loss. The cavaliers are now 17-0 in games following a loss.
Even without the help of All American Connor Shellenberger the cavaliers dropped 29 goals on the third ranked scoring defense, the most Tar Heels have allowed all year long. Xander Dickson started the scoring spree in the first quarter to tie the game at 1-1. By the end of the first quarter Payton Cormier would tack on 3 more to cap a 6-0 run for the cavaliers.
North Carolina would answer in the second though. The Tar Heels scored the first five goals before UVA knocked out four straight goals. Cormier tallied his fifth goal of the game on a UVA man-up chance with 46 seconds left in the half to conclude scoring for both sides.
After halftime UVA kept the momentum as they scored 3 back to back goals. Truitt Sunderland tallied his fifth goal of the season on an assist from Dickson two minutes in. After Cormier found McConvey for Virginia’s 16th goal of the game, the Tar Heels closed out period No. 3 by scoring four of the last five goals as UVA comfortably held a 17-8 lead by the end of the third.
UVA added on two more from Griffin Schutz and Dickson in the fourth as the Cavaliers started to mix in some of their reserves toward the back half of the period. Dickson’s goal in the fourth quarter marked UVA’s second extra-man score of the game and his seventh hat trick of the season. After the Tar Heels trailed by as many as 10 goals [19-9] in period No. 4, UNC scored three straight to close out the game.
UVA is back on the road in North Carolina next Saturday to play their second round against Duke.
