UVA evens the series in 8th inning theatrics
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- UVA softball evened the series and got their first home victory over the Hokies since 2017 thanks to some extra inning theatrics.
After a scoreless first frame UVA got on the board first off an infield single from Leah Boggs. With two runners and two outs Bogg's hit dropped just in time to allow her to land on first base, sending in Shelby Barbee to give UVA the 1-0 lead. Later in the third Barbee would extend the lead to 2-0 on a sac fly.
Virginia Tech would not be left in the dust though. In the top of the fourth the Hokies scored on a two out single from Rachel Castine. UVA answered the next inning, knocking off three runs. With bases loaded the cavaliers took the opportunity of a wild pitch to bring home a run before a fielding error at short allowed two more to score. The Hokies then evened the score in the seventh with a grand slam from Jayme Bailey.
For the second night in a row the hokies and cavaliers went to extra innings. In the bottom of the eight Jade Hylton drove a ground ball to allow Leah Boggs to reach third plate. Boggs then took advantage of fielding error and ran home, securing the win for UVA.
UVA and the Hokies meet for a rubber match in game 3 of the series Saturday at 2pm at Palmer Park.
