CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Fans of the University of Virginia baseball program are mourning the namesake of the program’s facility.

According to a releaseDisharoon Park was named in honor of him and his late wife, Ann Merriweather Disharoon who died in 2013.

The facility has been known as Disharoon Park since 2018 following a commitment from an anonymous donor to name it for the couple.

“I cannot overstate his importance in helping to build and grow our baseball program. The number of people, not only those affiliated with our program, who benefited from his generosity is immeasurable. He truly is the godfather of Virginia baseball,” said UVA head baseball coach Brian O’Connor in a statement. “I will miss his friendship, his leadership and presence at the ballpark. I’m comforted in the fact that he is reunited with Ann and their legacy in this program’s history will stand the test of time.”

The release says Disharoon retired to the Charlottesville area in the 1990s and became an active support of athletics programs at UVA, especially baseball.

He advocated for the program and worked to advance several initiatives that are still in operation at the stadium.
