ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A police chase ended in a three-car crash and heavy traffic at the intersection of Rio Road and Seminole Trail on Sunday evening.

Around 5:05 p.m., the Albemarle County Police Department initiated a traffic stop on Fashion Square Drive because of a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker.

Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but it would not stop. It continued going until it reached the intersection of Seminole Trail and Rio Road, at which point, it accelerated toward Rio.

The eastbound vehicle hit the median, striking two westbound vehicles on Rio Road.

After the accident, the driver ran away from the vehicle and ACPD officers pursued, arresting the suspect. A total of four people were involved in the crash and one person was taken to the hospital.

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Tyrik Alloyd Ayers of Albemarle County. Ayers was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for minor injuries.

According to the ACPD, Ayers was wanted in connection with a Jefferson Area Drug Enforcement Task Force investigation. Several drug and firearm charges were filed in October.

He is also wanted in Louisa County. Court records show a probation violation.

More charges are pending in connection with the Sunday incident, including felony eluding, felony hit-and-run, two counts of misdemeanor hit-and-run, and expired inspection.
