RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Several area wineries have been listed among the 10 best to visit in Virginia.

Reader’s Digest recently posted a piece by Nancy Bauer, the author of the Virginia Wine Trail Journal.

“In the last decade, Virginia has become known for world-class Cabernet Franc and for pushing the envelope on what European grapes can do,” she said.

With more than 300 wineries across Virginia, there are a lot to choose from, and the two biggest production regions are the Monticello and Middleburg American Viticultural Areas.

In the Monticello AVA, the list includes Early Mountain Vineyards, Michael Shaps Wineworks, Barboursville Vineyards, Wisdom Oak Winery, and Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards.

Bauer also highlights Cana Vineyards and Winery, Stone Tower Winery, Chatham Vineyards on Church Creek, Walsh Family Wine, and Sunset Hills Vineyard.

There are more than 80 types of grapes grown in Virginia, with some of the most notable being Petit Manseng and Petit Verdot.

Bauer also suggests checking out Virginia vineyards during October, which is Virginia Wine Month and a great time to see some of the fall foliage.

There are also multiple wine trails, such as the Gold Medal Wine Trail that comes from the annual Virginia Governor’s Cup wine competition.
