Two people facing charges for child abduction, making false police reports
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Two Albemarle County residents are facing charges associated with a child abduction.
The Albemarle County Police Department says Catherine Ortiz-Caridad and Wilson Canan-Cruz are currently in custody.
Officers responded to a call about an infant abduction in progress on Wilton Farm Road on April 23.
When they arrived, the officers found three adults arguing over the custody of a child.
Police say it was determined the infant’s biological mother has temporarily placed her baby in the care of relatives while she worked to establish herself in another state.
This was done with help from the Albemarle County Department of Social Services and Homeland Security Investigation.
When the mother came to get her child, the temporary guardians reportedly prevented her from accessing the child and then tried to present themselves to the police as the biological parents.
ACDSS took custody of the child at that point, and the infant has since been returned to its biological mother after a DNA test confirmed she was the child’s mother.
Ortiz-Caridad is facing one count of abduction and two counts of making a false police report, while Canan-Cruz is facing one count of abduction and one count of making a false police report.
They were both arrested on Monday and are being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
