ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Mountainview Elementary School students are making a difference in the community and accepting donations of socks for the homeless.

A group of fifth graders is part of a club called Kind Kids, and their project this year is to collect socks for The Haven, in collaboration with CVille Sock Love.

The Haven does a lot of work with the homeless here, and one of the biggest needs it has is socks.

So, Mountainview Elementary set up donation bins that have been placed around the school for the past month, and has received an outpouring of donations.

The original goal was 300 socks. So far, that amount has almost been tripled, with nearly 1,000 socks having been donated.

“It’s really something not a lot of people have, and they don’t think that socks are a necessity, but they are, and I’m really glad that we get to help them,” said Dylan Laura, a fifth grader at Mountainview Elementary.

There still is time to donate, because the drive will be accepting donations until Friday.

You can either go to The Market on Miller and Avon, or donate directly to CVille Sock Love.
