SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A middle school student is likely to face charges after a loaded gun was found in their possession at school on Friday.

According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, a school resource officer at Chancellor Middle School was notified Friday morning about a student who may be in possession of a gun.

A student reportedly told a teacher about seeing another student with a gun and the gun could be found in their backpack.

The teacher notified school administrators who reached out to the SRO.

An investigation resulted in a loaded .45 caliber handgun being found in the student’s backpack.

The sheriff’s office says the gun was not shown in any way to threaten students, faculty, or staff or to threaten the safety of the school.

The student is in custody and charges are pending. The investigation is ongoing.
