ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A nationally accredited nonprofit that works toward healthy aging is looking for its next leader.

The Center at Belvedere is currently searching for a new executive director.

Since its founding in 1960, it has continually worked and evolved to meet the changing needs of older adults in the greater Charlottesville communities, becoming a national model for senior health and independence along the way.

The executive director will work in partnership with the center’s Board of Directors in order to make healthy aging a community priority.

The center says the ideal candidate will work to cultivate a thriving culture and a welcoming, inclusive environment that reflects and respects the rich diversity of the communities it serves.

The director will need to provide leadership both internally and externally in order to build support for the center’s mission, which calls for creating a positive impact on the community by creating opportunities for health aging through social engagement, physical well-being, civic involvement, creativity, and lifelong learning.

The role’s essential functions include working with the Board of Directors; development, philanthropy and resource management; community relationships and partnerships; internal operations; staff development and culture; and program development and execution.

The Board of Directors has been hosting listening sessions with members, staff, volunteers and the community in order to get input on the type of leader the center wants.

Now, Spark Mill is searching for candidates, with a preferred application deadline of July 17 and a target start date of Oct. 30, prior to the retirement of current Executive Director Peter Thompson.

Under current national trends, one in five Americans will be over the age of 65 by 2030, and this aging population poses a public health challenge across the country.

The trend also highlights the need for a coordinated response to community priorities promoting health, safety and independence in age-friendly environments.
