Man who allegedly killed activist gets trial date
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The man accused of murdering a local gun violence activist has a trial date.
It will be on Sept. 26.
Tadashi Demetrius Keyes is charged with murdering Eldridge Vandrew Smith, a member of the group Brothers United to Cease the Killing, while Smith was sitting in his car in the Fifeville neighborhood back in January.
Last month, the charge was upgraded from second-degree to first-degree murder, meaning the prosecution believes it was premeditated.
Keyes is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He is being held at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail.
