ORANGE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Five businesses have been damaged by a fire in an Orange strip mall.

According to the Orange Volunteer Fire Company, the fire occurred around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday in the Orange Village Shopping Center.

The fire started in the Great Wall Chinese Restaurant, and when crews started to arrive, they saw a large column of smoke coming from the roof.

Firefighters were able to confirm no one was inside the restaurant and evacuated neighboring businesses.

A release says the fire began inside the hood system of the restaurant and then quickly spread into the structure of the building.

Units from the Orange County Fire and EMS, the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company, the Barboursville Volunteer Fire Company, and the Rapidan Volunteer Fire Company assisted.

The affected businesses, which suffered smoke and/or water damage, will remain closed until the building department or health department allow them to reopen.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
