ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- One person is dead and another in critical condition, after a shooting in the parking lot of the Jiffy Lube on Berkmar Drive and Seminole Trail in Albemarle County. Police say it happened around 5 p.m. on Friday.

"When units arrived, one victim was pronounced dead on scene. And one person was transported in critical condition,” Communications and Public Engagement Manager for Albemarle County, Abbey Stumpf said.

The Albemarle County Police Department responded to the shooting at the Jiffy Lube parking lot on Berkmar Drive where two people were shot.

Just before the end of the workday, employees from surrounding businesses heard what they described as either a tire popping, a crash, or maybe even fireworks, but it was much worse.

One Starbucks employee, who does not want to be identified, described what he saw.

"I came out of Starbucks, I heard what I thought was a loud car crash, I came over this way and saw the police pulling someone out from under a Dodge Charger,” he said.

He says he then went back inside.

One employee at Jiffy Lube says he was leaving when he heard gunshots. He says he saw eight people arguing. However, ACPD did not confirm that or how many people were in the area at the time of the shooting.

"You know, I don't have the details on what was going on at the time or sheer numbers or anything like that,” Stumpf said.

ACPD did confirm that a suspect has been detained.

"We also have one person that's currently detained. But at this point we cannot give any details or identifying information,” said Stumpf.

Officials believe this was an isolated incident, but they did not state what caused the shooting.

"So there's no threat to the public. Officers are not seeking any additional suspects at this point, related to this incident,” Stumpf said.

The victims' identities will not be released until after ACPD notifies the next of kin.

This is an ongoing investigation by ACPD's Criminal Investigations Division.
