CHARLOTTESVILLE Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church celebrated 20 years at its Lankford Avenue location with a service, food, and community gathering.

The pews quickly filled as community members and members of the church came together in song and worship.

"We wanted to celebrate with a community block party. We invited everyone to come. All the food is free, and we are just enjoying and having a good time with the lord here today,” Senior Pastor Alvin Edwards said.

The church was originally located on 105 Ridge Street until it grew out of the original building back in 2003. People who were a part of the reconstruction project and on the church’s building committee 20 years ago were recognized in the service.

“I am so excited, 20 years we have been in this building because a number of them have been here from the start. I have been here for 42 years this past July, so I am grateful to God to have the opportunity to serve here in Charlottesville,” Edwards said.

After the service, the community was invited for a meal in the fellowship hall and an afternoon filled with outdoor activities for all ages.
