CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- The Charlottesville Tom Sox fall to the Express in game one of the VBL semifinals 8-6. Though the Sox put up five runs in the 7th and 8th innings they came up just short as the Express take the lead in the series.

Just three batters into the game Mitchell Smith sent across the first run of the night with a fielders choice to second base. Despite an early pitching change from the Tom Sox in the 2nd, Reece Woody extended the lead with a three run shot, making it a 5-0 game. The struggles for the Sox would continue as Strasburg added another in the top of the 4th.

In the bottom of the 4th a balk with bases loaded brought in a run, but the Sox couldn't capitalize on the bases loaded situation any further. Trailing by 6 in the bottom of the 7th a comeback seemed unlikely, but  the Tom Sox were able to gain some momentum, sending three straight runs across the plate. The Sox forced a pitching change and cut the deficit even more as Nathan Fink capped the four run inning with a single to second base.

The rally would continue into the 8th inning with an RBI double from Sergio Rivera, bringing the Sox within 2. Davian Garcia came in relief for Lucas Cash and sent the Sox into the bottom of the 9th with a chance to complete the comeback but ran out of gas. In the end Charlottesville came up just two short.

The Tom Sox will hit the road for game 2 of the VBL semifinals in Strasburg Tuesday night at 7pm.
