ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A national animal welfare expert is coming to help the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA.

According to a release, the shelter has hired Outcomes for Pets Consulting, which is led by Kristen Hassen.

She is credited with working with other large animal shelters to reach and sustain a 90 percent or greater live release rate.

CASPCA says Hassen will be working with shelter and community stakeholders to conduct a review of the current state of companion animal welfare. This will include surveys, focus groups and individual interviews.

She will also be working with the shelter’s executive leadership team on shelter operations, pathway planning practices, volunteer and foster program best practices, and organizational culture.

“We are excited to have Kristen Hassen, a well-known and respected animal welfare expert, join the efforts to make the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA the best shelter it can be,” said Sue Friedman, interim executive director at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. “I am confident that, with Kristen’s help, the SPCA will be a better place for both people and pets.”

The release says the initial scope of this project will take at least three months. There will be updates to the organizational chart, standard operating procedures, progress reports, and stakeholder feedback reports.
