CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Josephine’s Village annual 5K was held Saturday morning to raise awareness for families with congenital heart defects.

Jessica and Jeffery Gleason’s first-born daughter, Josephine, was born with a heart defect in 2017 and passed away at just three months old. Now, every August, the community comes together for a race to remember her and raise money for families currently fighting through CHD.

“We just knew she was such an incredible fighter. We knew we wanted to bring not only her fidgeting spirit, but her village,” Jeffery said.

After the participants completed the race, everyone gathered for a “bubble ceremony” to honor the heart warriors. Participants received bubbles to blow together to remember those lost from CHD.

“Everyone gets quiet for a second, and we blow bubbles in remembrance of our heart angels,” Volunteer Moira Johnson, said.
