MADISON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia State Police is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash in Madison County.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. on Friday on North James Madison Highway, just north of Locust Dale Road when a southbound 2016 GMC Yukon ran off the right side of the roadway and hit with a tree.

According to police, three people from North Carolina died. The driver, 74-year-old Norman V. Hoover of Bullock, died at the scene of the crash due to his injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.   

Two passengers in the GMC, 34-year-old Stephen C. Satterwhite of Oxford, and 26-year-old James M. Rathbone of Henderson, both died at the scene of the crash due to their injuries. Neither was wearing a seat belt.  

A third passenger in the GMC, 24-year-old Peyton Scott of Oxford, was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt.  

The investigation closed Route 15 for about four hours. 

The crash remains under investigation.
