CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- TikTok has something for everyone, and the biggest name on the competitive dance side of TikTok comes from our area.

Dana and Kennedy Thompson have been sharing their journey of competitive dance for about a year, and have gained a following of almost half a million.

“And then it just went viral, which we were totally not expecting, but it’s been really cool to create a community there,” added Dana Thompson, the creator behind Dance Mom Dana.

Dance Mom Dana’s followers look for tips about what to bring to competitions, how to do the ballet buns, how their kids can improve their dance tricks and more.

“I think it’s just nice to show the world that it takes a lot of parental involvement and support in order for your kids to reach their dreams, so I hope that that is an inspiration to other parents,” said Thompson.

But this fun social media journey has done more than just bring a light to the world of competitive dance.

“Being able to kind of share the good things and the fun things, and just put out an inspirational or positive message is really important. There’s a lot of kids that don’t dance or families that don’t want to do dance, because they just see the negative side of dance, but there’s so many positive things,” said Thompson.

And it’s brought opportunities Kennedy could not have imagined.

“I’ve been able to be in TV shows, commercials, and it has unlocked singing, acting, and so many different things for me,” added Kennedy Thompson, the daughter of Dance Mom Dana.

But overall, they are happy to help out other dancers and moms, while growing their own relationship and Kennedy’s future career in dance.

“We get to bond more and honestly, if it weren’t for TikTok, I wouldn’t be doing as much dancing, singing and acting as I am today,” said Thompson.
