UVA women's soccer stay unbeaten with 2-1 win over West Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- A pair of goals from sophomore Meredith McDermott helped lead No. 12 Virginia to a 2-1 win over West Virginia Thursday evening.
The first of her goals coming in the fourth minute and then 15 minutes later, she added her second of the evening.
"I think our team played great in the first half, scored some good goals and could've had a couple others," head coach Steve Swanson said after the game.
In the second half, the Cavaliers played much of the game in their defensive half as the Mountaineers attacked in transition and scored an 85th minute courtesy of Taylor White.
"Credit to West Virginia," Swanson said. "They put some pressure on us. I don't think we adapted too well to that pressure and disappointed to give up the goal when we did and how we did, but those are situations you are trying to learn them in a game, not a practice and we just haven't had enough time."
The goal also snapped a streak of 444:01 minutes of scoreless soccer by the Cavalier defense to begin the season.
"We just have to keep pushing and keeping the energy high in the second half," McDermott said. "I think we did a good job of that, but I think we lot off on that a little bit, and it was unfortunate for them to score that goal, but I'm just glad that we got the win."
The team is back at home Sunday when they take on VCU at 2:30 p.m.
