CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore spoke at the University of Virginia on Monday to remember those who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks 22 years ago.

Gilmore was the governor on this day in 2001 and spoke at Garrett Hall on leadership during a crisis and how 9/11 forever changed the nation.

“The consequences of 9/11 are that it altered the United States. We are more secure I suppose, but we are also less free as the people, because we are bound up in the security requirements and implications,” Gilmore said.

Gilmore was joined by Dean Soloman to discuss the importance of preparedness, and America’s present-day readiness towards terrorism, both domestic and international.
