ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Senior Statesmen of Virginia hosted an Albemarle County School Board candidate forum Wednesday.

The organization invited four candidates, two from each competitive race. Only one candidate from each of those races participated.

The two candidates that showed were current White Hall District Representative Rebecca Berlin and candidate for the at-large seat Allison Spillman.

Spillman is running against Meg Bryce, the daughter of late conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Spillman said she thinks their race is gaining traction locally because issues include banned books and student freedoms are at the forefront.

"There is so much at stake, and we have very different views on things. And, so I'm happy that people are so engaged and that they care a lot. And, I would just urge them to really get all the facts before they make a decision when they vote because I think that's going to be the most important thing,” she said.

Spillman said she's fighting for student safety and success.

Election Day is Nov. 7 and early voting begins Sept. 22.
