CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Great Harvest Bread Cafe is partnering with Too Good To Go, an app that connects customers to restaurants and stores that have surplus unsold food.

Each year, 119 billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States, and that equates to 130 billion meals.

Too Good To Go allows local restaurants to sell a mystery bag of food, which would typically go to waste, for $3, $4, or $5.

Great Harvest hopes that other restaurants participate in the future and adds that having an outlet like this in Charlottesville can bring nothing but good to the community.

“I would love to see other restaurants get involved, because I know at the end of the day there is food left over, and not all the charities are getting the food, because it's hard to deliver and pick it up. This way, if customers go online, see what’s available, they can reserve a grab bag and get it for one-fourth of the cost than getting it and sitting at the restaurant,” said Aileen Mangotto, the owner of Great Harvest Bread Cafe.

These surprise bags are valued at $15, but you can get them for $4.99 from Great Harvest if you download the free app Too Good To Go
