CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- An area organization is opening its annual winter emergency shelter early.

PACEM announced on Thursday that it will be opening its 20th winter season shelter on Oct. 21 due to support from the Charlottesville First United Methodist Church and other community partners.

According to a release, this will help to relieve some of the encampment congestion currently occurring in Market Street Park and address neighborhood safety concerns.

Information regarding the location and access to the shelter will be published online and shared with emergency responders.

Additionally, PACEM says its staff will be canvassing the park to help people in need of shelter understand their options and resolve access barriers.

“We meet folks where they are,” said Board Chair Cliff Haury. “And we adapt to what they need. Right now, they’re in the park and need shelter. That’s something we already know how to address.”

Other community partners supporting this early opening include the PATH Team, the Salvation Army and Charlottesville.

The shelter will be open through April 12.
