DURHAM, N.C. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Dani Mendez-Trendler helped the eighth-ranked Virginia field hockey team pick up a double-overtime victory at Duke Sunday afternoon. The sophomore scored the game-winning goal three minutes into the second overtime period.

“These two teams bring out the best in each other," UVA field hockey coach Michele Madison said. "Statistically, it was a pretty even game as well as in the fight and in the hustle. They got it last time and we got it this time, so it's only going to help us both get better.”

The Blue Devils picked up an 2-1 overtime win nine days prior in Charlottesville.

Taryn Tkachuk put the Cavaliers on the scoreboard in the opening minutes of the game. Mendez-Trendler drove into the circle and fired off a pass to Tkachuk, who was positioned right in front of the net and knocked it into the cage 2:53 into the first quarter for her sixth goal of the season.

The Hoos went into the half with a 1-0 lead, but Alaina McVeigh forced the extra period in the third quarter with her 14th goal of the season.

The Cavaliers are back in action on Friday for their final regular season game of the season when they No. 3 North Carolina at 4 p.m.
