CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Charlottesville City Schools has announced an interim principal for Charlottesville High School.

Superintendent Dr. Royal Gurley announced on Monday that Kenneth Leatherwood would step into the role.

According to a letter sent to the CCS community, Leatherwood has decades of experience with the division, dating back to 1981 when he was a teacher and basketball coach at CHS.

He has filled various leadership roles throughout the division over the years, including serving as the principal at CHS for six years.

Even after retiring in 2012, Leatherwood has continued to serve as an interim principal at several schools.

He will take on the role at the high school immediately after the Thanksgiving Break.

Meanwhile, the position for a permanent principal has now been posted online and is accepting applications.

The release says it is likely Leatherwood will remain in the post through July until a new principal can begin.
