CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 News) -- The Albemarle, Charlottesville and Rivanna garden clubs are hoping to bring some holiday cheer to those visiting Charlottesville by decorating the train station.

It was 17 years ago that Katya Spicuzza first decided to spruce the train station up.

“I showed up at the train station right before Christmas and the train master was so sad. She said it was the most depressing place she’d ever worked in her life. She’d come from the Midwest and I said, 'That's pitiful, what can we do about that?' She said, 'I don’t know but gosh, you’d think they would have a tree or something, wouldn’t you?' I said, 'And you will,'” said Spicuzza, founder of Amtrak Holiday Decorating.

Since then she decorated the station in greenery from her garden and then 13 years ago the local garden clubs joined her.

A UVA student returning from Thanksgiving break said she was excited to see the holiday spirit already in full force in Charlottesville.

“It’s so cute, I love it. It puts everybody in the holiday spirit. We have exams so it’s a little bit of a mental drag down but to see that it’s all decorated and everyone’s in a good mood and happy that makes it better,” said Mia Cachion, a second-year student at UVA.

All of the greenery was provided by the local garden clubs.
