CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The annual Red Kettle campaign is underway, raising money for the Salvation Army of Charlottesville.

Since it kicked off nearly one month ago, the campaign has collected more than $47,000.

The fundraising goal for this year is $110,000, so the Salvation Army is calling on the community to turn out in support of area families in need.

Money raised through the Red Kettles will be used to assist people experiencing poverty, addictions and economic hardships.

It will also support emergency relief for disaster survivors, drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation, and clothing and shelter for people in need.

Additionally, the Angel Tree is up at sites around the city, offering people a chance to make a child’s holiday wishes come true.

Thanks to the people who “adopt” an Angel Tree child, more than 840 children in more than 350 families will get gifts this holiday.
